The dollars and cents of place

Despite an observation decades ago by the late Tip O’Neill, former speaker of the House of Representatives, all politics is no longer local. Neither is all philanthropy.

The internet has dramatically changed both arenas. We’ve become global, national and hyper-local, all at the same time.

Yet a strong sense of place still permeates charitable giving in the diverse collection of hamlets, towns, villages and cities we call Upstate New York.

Regional United Ways and community foundations play major roles in local philanthropy, as do thousands of locally based corporate and family foundations.

We’ve launched Upstate Giving as a sort of atlas of this topography. The site is designed to help nonprofits find like-minded funders who care about community.
