Ithaca has high proportion of lesbian couples

Tompkins County, home to Cornell University and Ithaca College, is one of the top 10 counties nationwide for the percentage of female-female couple households, according to a report from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Of 42,273 households, 2.5 percent in Ithaca’s county were same-sex female households. The percentage ranked Tompkins sixth nationally; it was the only New York State county on the top 10 list.

No Upstate counties made the list for most male-male households, although New York City ranked third, after San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

The 2022 American Community Survey estimated there were 1.3 million same-sex couple households in the U.S.; 58% (740,523) were married couples.
