Ithaca was named after the island home of the Greek hero Ulysses.

As home to Cornell University, Ithaca is an important financial hub in rural Upstate New York. The college receives millions of dollars in research grants for programs such as the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source. The agricultural school anchors the statewide Cooperative Extension network.

The city is also home to Ithaca College and such organizations as the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research and the Paleontological Research Institution. The Park Foundation, founded by media mogul Roy Park, is an important local funder, as is its spinoff, the Triad Foundation.
