The village of Phelps, best known for its sauerkraut festival, is an example of how one philanthropist can make a lasting difference. After wisely investing an inheritance from an aunt, local resident Mary Hicks Preston began donating to local institutions. She kept her gifts to the library, the community center, and other organizations private. Preston died in 2005, but her legacy, the Mary Hicks Preston Historical Improvement & Betterment Foundation, continues to support Phelps endeavors.
