Even if you’ve never been to Syracuse, odds are you’ve witnessed the largesse of Bill Pomeroy, one of the city’s biggest philanthropists. The William G. Pomeroy Foundation, which has a two-pronged mission of health and history, has funded more than 1,200 roadside markers and plaques across the U.S. The foundation has also made major contributions to the Central New York Community Foundation and Crouse Health.

City institutions also attract support from outside the region. Syracuse University has received sizeable awards from the National Science Foundation and the Lilly Endowment.
