Oneida County > Utica

County: Oneida

Population: 65,283

Utica was named after city of Africa.

Utica’s tradition of civic contribution can be traced in its stellar art museum, Munson. Until 2023, when it underwent a rebranding campaign, the museum was known as the Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute, named for three generations of local philanthropists.

Industrialist Alfred Munson amassed a fortune in textiles, coal mines, canals and railroads. His daughter, Helen Elizabeth Munson Williams, was an art collector, philanthropist and savvy investor who further increased the family’s wealth. Helen’s daughter Maria married Thomas R. Proctor. Another daughter, Rachel, married Thomas Proctor’s half-brother, investor Frederick Proctor. Siblings and in-laws continued acquiring art objects and chartered the art institute in 1919. A century later, it’s a cultural gem and a magnet for state and foundation monies.

Utica College, a spinoff of Syracuse University, became Utica University in 2022.
