Saranac Lake spans Franklin and Essex counties. The Trudeau Institute, one of the largest nonprofits here, began as a tuberculosis sanitarium and transitioned over the next century into medical research. The institute is known for its work on immunity to infectious disease.

State funds have supported construction of the Adirondack Rail Trail, which passes through here. Upon completion, the trail will connect Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, and Tupper Lake.
