Salman Rushdie

On Aug. 12, 2022, author Salman Rushdie was assaulted on a stage at the Chautauqua Institution, where he was set to address an audience. Rushdie faced death threats for decades after the 1988 publication of his novel, “The Satanic Verses.” Chautauqua has a long history as a peaceful, civilized place – an annual setting for worship, arts, lectures, and other programs. That the attack would occur here was a crime unto itself.
