Beacon was named after Mount Beacon, where colonists lit fires to warn of British troops during the Revolution.
The Dia:Beacon art museum, housed in a former Nabisco box-printing facility, is a major draw for visitors from outside Dutchess County. A study by the Center for Creative Community Development estimated that the museum’s annual economic impact exceeded $12 million. The museum is operated by the Dia Center for the Arts (dba Dia Art Foundation), which is based in New York City.
